1
Speed Sensors and Encoders for Railway Applications
2
The Applications
  • Traction control (Propulsion)
  • Wheel slippage prevention (Braking)
  • Vehicle speed + distance travelled
  • (Driver information, signalling and automatic train protection)
  • Automatic door control
3
Expertise
  • Providing the right solution is more than just supplying sensors.

  • Technical expertise
  • In-depth knowledge of the industry and the applications
  • Reliable products
  • Production flexibility
  • Current and future regulations and standards
  • Contract documentation
  • Cables – DIN 5510 required by fire regulations.
4
Types of Sensors
  • Speed sensors
    • Mounted in and on motors, gearboxes, axle ends, bearing housings.
    • Customer can provide
    •      own toothed target wheels.
5
Speed sensors
  • Extremely rugged and compact
  • For separate toothed wheels module m=1 to m=3.5
  • (DIA. = 25.4mm to 7.3mm)
  • Single channel for speed measurement
  • 2 signals provided by one sensor for additional direction evaluation (DOT)
  • Version with up to 3 channels available
  • Electrically isolated channels also available
6
Output Signals

7
GEL247

  • Axial or radial cable outlet
  • - Single-track square-wave signals
  • - Two 90°-shifted square-wave signals for
  •        direction sensing
  • - Two signals with potential separation
  • - All signals available in their inverted form (RS485)
  • Over 250 customer specific variants available

Latest Developments
10
Sensor for explosion hazard areas
  • Speed and position measurement in machines and
  • motors
  • Speed and position measurement in
  • explosion hazard areas
  • Position measurement on piston rods

11
Compact Speed Sensors
12
High Resolution Precision Encoders
13
High Resolution Precision Encoders
  • High number of pulses per revolution
    • Integral toothed wheel, m=0.3, z=256
    • separate interpolation for z=1024

  • Integrated bearings

  • Integrated coupling in the hollow shaft
    • Easy installation
14
High Resolution Encoders
15
Multi-channel encoders
  • Frequently used when several independent signals are required and pick-up locations are limited.
  • For example:
  • Traction control, wheel slip prevention, vehicle speed, event recorder, door control, signalling, etc

  • Designed for axle-end mounting
    • Extreme vibration resistant
  • Magnetic sensors
    • Robust and resistant to contamination by oil, dirt and moisture
